Reflection on inferential skills

31 03 2008

Infering things is challenging but you will get a small rush of satisfaction when u thought of how to infer it. People usually mistaken that infering is just copying down the information given and rephrase it but the actual meaning is to understand the information and process it into an inferential answer.
I am trying my best to hone this skill because it is useful and may help you answer some difficult questions. It is a skill that everybody should learn so i encourage people to learn and master this skill.

Reflection on what was learned having to teach the class

30 03 2008

From the few presenters, I have learnt that we need to talk naturally and not read from the script. When reading from script, it does not show explanation. Instead, it gives more about the facts, evidence and more information. But if we read from the information that you already know, if show a understanding for both me and the others. It also shows that you are very familiarize of what we are talking about.

We also need to talk loud because people might think that you are very nervous and not very well-prepared. Although it is alright to be a little bit nervous, but the information might be unclear. We need to talk loud because we might have very important information to share but others can’t hear it and it is also a waste of time if we keep repeating our self.

Last of all, we need to be well-prepared by asking our self. If we were the audience, what questions will we asked. From there we can make some question for us to ask them if they did not ask us. This is to train us in times of need if someone asked us a hard question and we have some form of answer to tell them.

Reflection on inferring skills.

30 03 2008

In the past, I never know how useful inference can help me.I know this as I encountered difficulties when i had to analyse my research and write out my inference based on it.

For example,I copy and paste the whole chulk of information and use it.But it does not help me,instead, i had to redo the whole thing  using P.E.E.L.Therefore, it helps me a lot as i know how to plan it.

Now, i use the infering skills that I had learn and plan my reflections just like this reflection. It helps greatly as I do not write useless inferences and organise them well. Also, my inferring skills help me in my exams, and allows me to explain to other better.

Slide 4: Why we decided to present the documentary in this way?  We are interested in Adnan Bin Saidi as we had little knowledge on him.  He is a good role model for us to learn from. From his determined spirit to his love for his country ,we are very sure that it would be interesting for us to present a documentary on him.  It would be very challenging for us.  We want to know how much a person know about Elizabeth Choy, what she did for the British during the Japanese Occupation and who she is .

Slide 5: Various primary sources Men of the Malay Regiment, recruited from local native volunteers, at bayonet practice on Singapore Island, October 1941 The Malay Regiment 3-inch mortar team in action, circa 1940s.

Slide 6: Quiz time! Source-based question 1: Tan Sri Dato’ Mubin Sheppard, an ex-officer and former POW, says of his friend the late Lieutenant Adnan: “He was heavily outnumbered by the Japanese…they bombed him but he fought on fiercely and inflicted heavy losses on them…. Adnan would have never surrendered under any circumstances. He was absolutely dedicated. In fact, just before fighting, he adopted a motto for his platoon, ‘Biar putih tulang, jangan putih mata’ – death before dishonor.” What does this tells you about Adnan Bin Saidi? Taken from :http://web.singnet.com.sg/~nainz/malayregiment.html

Slide 7: Source-Based Answers  This source tells us that Lieutenant Adnan is an excellent leader. We know this as the source said that “” From this source, we can see that the Malay regiment that were fighting the Japanese at Pasir Panjang, till they die as they also remember the words that Lieutenant Adnan said to that before the battle “he adopted a motto .“ for his platoon Death before dishonor”. Thus, this strive the soldiers of the Malay Regiment to fight the Japanese and for their country till they die. This motto that Lieutenant Adnan set for the them are still remembered in POWs and many others who suffered from the war.

Group’s Reflection on Kim’s group

29 03 2008

Sorry for the late reflection on kim’s group, due to lack of time and homework.

We realised that we had to be ready for the presentation with answers. We know this as many groups like Kim’s group encountered many problems as they are not prepared with answers for questions on their mind map which ms lee and the class asked. From here, we learnt that we must be prepared, think of questions and put ourselves in our classmate’s shoes so we can ask ourselves questions and answers for our presentation. Therefore, being prepared for the presentation is very important.

Also, Kim’s group needs to speak louder and stand in front of the class. From here, we know that we must try to project our voices as much as possible that even our voices can be heard outside the class and we should do research on the vocabulary words that we do not know before our presentation. Thus, we should try to speak the loudest that we can.

However, Kim’s group is the group that did a good job so far.We know this as they did not speak from a piece of paper and try their best to maintain eye contact with the class. We should take their group as a role model and memorise the details in our powerpoint slide and mindmap. From this, we can see that Kim’s group put in a lot of effort to remember the information in their powerpoint slide and try their very best in projecting their voices.Hence, their group had done a good job and we should learn from them so that our presentation will be similar as them, but much more better.

This is the email you should have gotten a few days ago, please finish the work given by ms lee and take it seriously as we are not the highest scoring group. If you are lazy to login to your email, then you can refer to this. It should save you the trouble of logging in and out. Following is the email:

The test grade for April that you will be getting will be based on the PW grade for both Eng and History

This weekend is the last one for you to make sure you improve the work on the PW blog according to the rubrics given for marking.

MUST-DO:

1) Reflections: Every student must post at least 3 reflections of at least 150 words ( with at least 3 paragraphs) on the following

- group work and individual contributions to project- include something on preparing for the presentations and what u learned having to teach the class
- problems encountered and attempts to solve these: what have you learned from this?
- research skills, history skills like analysing sources, inferring, mindmapping, organising, questioning sources etc, multiliteracies skills ( english) such as planning movie, shooting, scripting, storyboarding

2) Organising Research done so far in mindmaps, slideshows, toondoo etc, making sure the references for all the sources and research are included ( see example in project wiki on how this is to be written), Especially Important is UPDATED MINDMAPS based on PRESENTATION in class and the SOURCES/QUESTIONS to be posted. EVEN if you have NOT presented, the info MUST also be ON THE BLOG!

These are just the BASIC requirement – of course if u have MORE, you will SCORE higher marks and the more CREATIVE you are, the higher the marks will be. NOTE QUALITY IS IMPORTANT, so don’t just focus on quantity

HIGHEST SCORING Group so FAR: Kim’s Grp: War Experience, Weihoon’s Grp on Heroism and Zilu’s Group On propaganda

Others better do the work suggested over the weekend and USE the forms I have uploaded as examples of how to reflect ( not just one para) but must analyse reasons for problems encountered , suggest solutions and don’t just say some people were irresponsible , must explain what responsibility mean and give examples

One paragraph to focus on ONE THING !!!!!PEEL
