Tacit

Found at page 46,line 28: “Our tacit treaty with Miss Maudie was that we could play on her lawn, eat her scuppernongs if we didn’t jump on the arbour, and explore her back lot, …”

Definition: Silently agreed.This means that Dill,Jem and Scout had silently agreed that they would not play on her lawn,eat her scuppernongs and more.

Benign

Found at page 46, line 26: “Until Jem and Dill excluded me from their plans, she was the only one another lady in the neighbourhood, but a relatively benign presence.

Definition of benign: kind and gentle.In this case, Miss maudie was kind and nice to Scout.

Arbour

Found at page 46, line 30:”.. eat her scuppernongs if we didn’t jump on the arbour , and explore her vast back lot, terms so generous we seldom spoke to her,”

Definition: a shaded area in a garden.

Magisterial

Found at page 47,line 5: “She would appear on the porch and reign over the street in magisterial beauty”

Definition of magisterial: to have control over something that makes people worthy of respecting her.

Pestilence

Found at page 47, line 23:”Miss Maudie’s face likened such an occurrence unto an Old Testament pestilence.”

 

Definition of pestilence: Highly contagious diseases that can cause an epidemic.

Bridgework and cordiality

Found at page 47,line 29:”With a click of her tongue she thrust out her bridgework, a gesture of cordiality that cemented our friendship.”

Definition of bridgework: Many sections of teeth that are replaceable and it is removable from one’s mouth.

Definition of cordiality: concerned. In this case,it means that the gesture make by Miss maudie tell us that she is concerned about Scout.

Definition: Horrible

Definition of notion: One’s thoughts or imaginations.

Definition: comfortable.

Mounted

Definition: Riding on a horse.

Definition: Very curious or Nosy.

Hitherto

page 47,line 31-34: “Miss Maude’s benevolence extended to Jem, and Dill, whenever they paused I their pursuits: we reaped the benefits of a talent Miss Maudie has hitherto kept hidden from us.”

Meaning of Hitherto:

Asinine

Found at page 55, line 3: “Lastly,we were to stay away from that house until we were invited there, we were not to play an asinie game he had seen us playing or make fun of anybody on this street or in this town – “

Definition: Foolish. In this case, it means that Jem, Scout and Dill are not to play any game that is silly.

Edification

Found at page 55-line 11: ” ‘No,’ said Atticus, ‘putting his life’s history on display for the edification of the neighbourhood.’ ”

Definition: Education, knowledge. In this case, Atticus do not want the Jem and company to let everyone in the neighbourhood.

Quibbling

Found at page 55 ,line  21: “Jem decided there was no point in quibbling, and was silent.”
