Quote picker- Chapter 4&5 Quotes

27 06 2008

Chapter 4

Calpurnia’s tyranny, unfairness, and meddling in my buisness faded to gentle grumblings of general disaproval.

Calpurnia is a person who easily gets angry, but she also cares alot about Jem, Scout and other children. This can be seen from when she yelled to Jem, Scout and Dill “Lemonade time! You all get in outta that hot sun ‘fore you fry alive”. She was worried for the children that they might get sick and sunburned under the hot sun.

Does this by any chance got to do with the Radleys?

This is the part where Atticus saw Jem, Scout and Dill playing the game. Since they did not want Atticus to know, they lied. “No sir,” Jem said, reddening. Atticus than replied, ” I hope it doesn’t”. This shows that Atticus does not want to make fun of the Radleys thhough they are mean. Atticus might probably know about what they are playing got to do with the Radleys anyway. Jem gave himself away a little as his face reddened.

Chapter 5

She loved everything that grew in God’s earth.

This is the description for Miss Maudie. Nothing is totally perfect in this earth. It isn’t possible to like everything. Everyone has fears and dislikes, it is only how you overcome them. This is also explained by “she found a blade of nut-grass on her yard it was like the Secoond Battle of the Marne”. This shows how much she hates nut-grass. The following actions she did to them shows us as well.
“She swooped down upon it with a tin tub and subjected it to blasts from beneath with a poisonous substance” Miss Maudie claimed that the poisonous substance was so poisonous that it would kill them if they didn’t stand out of her way.
“Why did you want Mr Radley to come out?”
Atticus asked Jem this question when they are caught.Mr Radley had the right to choose to come out or not.Mr Radley minded his own buisness, so why don’t they mind their own buisness?
They wanted Mr Radley out so that they could invite him out for ice-cream.

“We weren’t making fun of him, we weren’t laughin’ at him.”

This is what Jem had said after the three of them (Jem, Scout and Dill). They were finally caught by Atticus. “Putting his life’s history on display for the edification of the neighbourhood.” This also proves that Atticus did knew about they game that day.Atticus was a very old and experienced lawyer. This can be seen in “Jem finally realised that he had been done in by the oldest lawyer’s trick on record.”

Quote picker- Chapter 2&3-Quotes

26 06 2008

Chapter 2

She had bright auburn hair, pink cheeks, and wore crimsom finger-nail polish.

She also wore high-heeled pumps and a red-and-white striped dress.

This tells us that Miss Caroline was very particular with the way she dressed and looked. She also likes red colours as she wore crimsom finger-nail polish, had auburn hair and red-and-white striped dress.

His absence of shoes tells us how he got them.

This is refering to the hookworms Walter had.Even if he had shoes,he would worn them only on the first day of school and then he would discarded them until mid-winter, as seen in “If Walter had owned any shoes, he would have worn them the first day of school and then discarded them untile mid-winter.”These shows that Walter is from a poor family, but his family ain’t exactly poor, as “he did have on a clean shirt and neatly mended overalls.” Walter is a thin boy as described by “I saw a muscle jump in his skinny jaw.”

This chapter is more on the personalities of the characters. There aren’t many important quotes.
Chapter 3

He was the filthiest human I had ever seen.

This quote is refering to Burris Ewell. “His neck was grey”, “back of his hands were rusty” and “his fingernails were black deep into the quick.” All these quotes are show that he is really very dirty.Burris was also has a bad attitude and is rude. The following quote shows it:

He gave a short contemptuous snort.

This is not all, he also snorted and slouched leisurely to the door when Miss Caroline threatened to report to the principal.Eventhough he was rude, “he was afraid of a child half his height”. Burris Ewell is also a person who doesn’t care about others, and is very stubborn. He wanted to make Miss Caroline cry and he made sure he did.

You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view–until you climb into his skin and walk around in it

This quote is taken from the conversation between Atticus and Scout. This piece of advice given to her changes her behaviour and development for the rest of the novel.”Climb into his skin and walk around in it” means you have to live with sympathy and learn to be more understanding towards others.
This is for Chapter 2 and 3.I tried to explain and elaborate more already. I will edit the quotes for Chapter 1.
